A round-up of 2014

Image
So, it's the time of the year to look back and think about where we have done well or fouled up. Honestly, 2014 is definitely better than expected after coming out of a rather dreary 2013. What better way to recount the year by going through my "15 before 15" list. A report card of sorts.

Being a better mum

source As I scanned through my list of my " 15 before 15" (which is the list of 15 things I wanted to achieve before 2015), some of them is about spending more (quality) time with J although not explicitly expressed. I constantly struggle to find that balance and it leads to what I call a world wide phenomena of the "working mothers' guilt".

Infertility: What I learnt from it.

Many of you probably know that we did not have an easy time  trying to conceive our first child. J came to us via our first cycle of stimulated intrauterine insemination or SO-IUI as some people know it. This happened after we have tried a couple of ways to get pregnant to no avail, and we embarked on SO-IUI, We had very little expectations as we have heard of low success rates doing so. We were probably much better off doing IVF.

Raising awareness for Child Literacy

source My mother has always emphasized the importance of education since we were kids. We were not very well to do. So, mum always tells us that the only way for us to have a better a life is to ensure we are well-educated. While her constant nagging for us to study hard was bothersome then, I cannot be more thankful for it now.

Staycation: Wanderlust Hotel

Image
We used to travel out of town for our birthdays since we got married. These days, with the man's crazy schedules, my never ending pile of work to do, plus the addition of a little rascal, it isn't always easy to plan something ahead of time. That said, we will still try to spend some quality time together, and it seems like staycations are the answer to having some time to rest and relax. Earlier this year, I had a birthday staycation with the 2 men in my life. Hence, for the husband, I planned a one night getaway at Wanderlust Hotel, with the intention of exploring Little India in the evening (which did not happen by the way because the little rascal wanted to sleep). Wanderlust Hotel is part of the Unlisted Collection Group, the good people behind popular boutique hotels 1929 and The Majestic. I  am a sucker for boutique type hotels which often comes with impecceable service and a unique experience. This one did not disappoint.  Minutes after confirming my book

Christmas Countdown at Plaza Singapura

Image
Plaza Singapura holds a very special place in my heart, or in fact for many 80s kid like me. I spent every weekend at Yamaha Music School… and sat by the window of Do-Re-Mi cafeteria having my soya sauce chicken noodles. After graduation, my first job was at a retail service centre at Plaza Singapura. So I spent almost every waking hour at the mall, had my meals there and even did most of my shopping at the mall.

We have always been advocates of outdoor play. As much as possible, during weekends, we will take the boy out to work up a sweat! Just the thought of going out, whether it is to get past those mini obstacle course at the playground , or simply taking a walk in the park makes J very happy. When he gets his dose of sunshine,  his mood almost always gets lifted. He whines less, eats and sleeps better, which makes us happy parents too!
