1 year after Juvenile Dermatomyositis

Image
We have crossed the "1st year anniversary" from the time we got J's diagnosis. He has had Juvenile Dermatomyositis  (JDM) for over a year now, and at this point, we cannot be more thankful for him to have come this far of absolutely showing no signs of his illness. And earlier this month,  we marked the last day he needs to take any prednisone (steroids) His illness is still active, and we are working hard to help him reach remission. In the meantime, we are also seizing every opportunity to let him enjoy his childhood as we were told even after remission, the odds of it relapsing is 60%. The events leading up to his diagnosis can be found here.  I recalled when I wrote that post, I was still overwhelmed with emotions. We didn't know who to listen to and what kind of monster we were facing. Whatever we could find on Dr. Google pointed to this being a battle for years. For some kids, it is a lifetime. But, we are super super grateful of his pediatrician and

3 reasons why making terrariums can teach your kid a thing or two

Image
Did you know that terrariums are really costly? I love terrariums and I love how they can make me happy just by looking at them,  but I can never figure out why they are always so expensive. (Oh! And, I am really bad at keeping them alive, which is probably not best discussed on this post) That said, when Masons Home Decor offered me a DIY Terrarium Kit, I thought why not. Maybe, I can start making my own going forward, just in time for our new home (if it happens this year!). But...it is through this activity, I realised why terrariums cost so much, and rightly so and that's because making them is an art which requires a good deal of patience and precision! This boy, in his excitement to start poured the coloured pebbles in before the soil and mixed them all up. So we ended up with no pebbles after that! LOL! J and I had good fun working on the pack and here's 3 reasons why we will not hesitate to do this again although it's a huge big mess! 1) Makin

[FTWM Truths] Why I don't lunch out

Image
This post is dedicated to my colleagues. Many know I don't usually dine out during lunch while at work. When I do, it is usually for official work reasons (must be really good reasons like celebrating a birthday etc) or to meet up with friends I have not caught up for ages or when I am super stressed and need a breather.

May 2015 - A month to be grateful

Image
The month of May has always been our favorite month of each year. Almost all the important events of our lives since we got married happened in May. This means we always plan big things... celebration type things, during the month.  So you can imagine how busy we were this month.

15 ways on how I embraced motherhood

Cadi.Sense Wireless Thermometer

Image
Monitoring the temperature when the little one falls ill is essential, yet if I could gladly outsource I would.  Hands up mummies and daddies who struggle with your kids to have their temperature taken when they are already feeling lousy. How about the struggle to get up every hour at night to take their temperature   and end up squinting your eyes to read it and at expense that you might wake your kid up?

How I manage being a Full Time Working Mum (FTWM)

Image
"How do you manage without a helper and still find time to blog?" is one of the most common question I get since J entered our lives. Well, the answer really is... I sometimes don't know how I do it either. Some days I am a wreak, some days it's a breeze and most days to be honest, I struggle on many levels.

Nutella Cream Cupcakes

Image
I said I wanted to bake for the boy's birthday, and so I tried my hand at making some cupcakes last sunday. I am happy to report that my first attempt at baking and frosting cupcakes was a sucesss, with room for improvement. The cupcakes turned our slightly dry, so I will need to work on the batter, ensuring I don't over-mix. And, the frosting could do with a little bit more colour. A good start nonetheless. Let's see if I can keep up with this baking momentum to eventually bake for J's birthday. Nutella Cream Cupcakes (makes 12 cupcakes)  Ingredients for vanilla cupcakes (adapted from www.nigella.com) 125  grams  self-raising flour 125  grams  caster sugar (I used 100grams only) 125  grams  soft  unsalted butter 2  large  eggs 1  teaspoon  vanilla essence (because I ran out of vanilla extract. If you use extract, it should only be about 1/2 teaspoon) 2  tablespoons  milk Directions: 1) Blitz the sugar, eggs and butter until mixture is smo

Love in the simple things

Image
It's valentine's day today, and this day holds a special meaning to Hubs and me. 11 years ago, we got together over kway teow soup and iced milo. Not the most romantic valentine's day, but because it was all so simple, it sort of shaped how our relationship was going to be like in the future. I don't remember being taken out for expensive dinners or being romanced under the stars. We buy gifts for each other, not for special occasions like today, but just because we feel like it.  It is precisely this simplicity that makes me appreciate this special man in my life. Trust and communication defines this relationship. All these years, I never needed to second guess what he was thinking about. Yes, I have thrown tantrums, made fuss over the littlest things. I still do really.  But this man tolerates my nonsense all because of the simple reason that he loves me. (Ok lah... although i sometimes don't trust him with the boy... but that's perhaps another stor

WMST#4 - Learning to trust

Image
Delegation requires a certain level of trust between the delegator and "delegatee". I always try to delegate at work as it is the most efficient way to get things done. While not always in the manner I'd like it to be, I accept that there's no perfection anyway. That took me quite a few years to come to terms with and I advocate it to all my colleagues and friends when they whine about how much work they have. Unfortunately, when it comes to matters at home, it is hard to practise what I preach. The fact that J did not come into our lives easy, it is only natural that I want to protect him with all my might. A little too much sometimes (excessive most times actually!). From the time he entered my life, I have been his sole caregiver (other than the lovely teachers from his school). I insisted that I am around J whenever possible. Most times, I rather rush to pick J up from school than bother anyone else in the family to do the job, even if it makes my life a l

WMST #1 : 5 Daily Make-up essentials

Image
I am starting a series called " Working Mommas' Suvival Tips" (WMST) on my blog to share how I manage each day working full time with an active toddler. This will also be my first linky which will be open from now till 31 May 2014. Although I have been  juggling motherhood and a full time job for 1.5 years now, I am still learning. I don't have an organised life as each new day brings brand new challenges. As J grows older, I find myself exploring new ways to be more efficient at home and at work so I can spend time with him, and give him the attention he deserves. Sometimes, that  means cutting some corners and saving time on even the smallest thing such as putting on make-up. If I had flawless skin, I would be more than happy to walk out of the house confidently with no make-up at all. I used to take considerable effort to prim myself for work. Taking 15 minutes to paint my face seems like a luxury now (especially with the toddler hanging onto your legs ask

A walk in the park

Image
After being stuck in the house for most of Saturday because Mummy was sick, J couldn't be happier to be out exploring the neighborhood. We took an evening walk last Saturday to Little Guilin, and it is definitely a gem of the west, often forgotten by many. The little sister of Guilin in China at the backyard of our new home "Yay! I can finally get some fresh air after hearing mummy cough non-stop the whole day!" "Huh?!" "Let me go Papee.... I want to run and be free!"  Here comes the Giant!  "Ok! Time to take a stroll back home !"  Linking up with:
