In Conversation: Stepping out and building a business

I am always inspired by mothers who dare to step out of their comfort zones, whether they are SAHMs or FTWMs, to start their own business. I have always wanted to do the same. Ideas have been conceived, but never really gotten down to putting my plans into action. It takes a lot of discipline and I am personally still working towards making my dream a reality.

Today, I am really happy to have caught up with Pia Soliman, the brains behind Poolzies - Pool Shoes. Remember? I just did a review on these interesting pool shoes for kiddos?

When I asked Pia if she would like to share how she decided to start her business, she gamely agreed despite being a little shy as she hopes her story can inspire other mummies to do the same. I love how she sees her business as something to motivate her kids, and inspire them to do better in their lives.

1) Can you tell us about yourself?

I'm a work at home mum with a 3 year old son, Aiden and a 15 month old daughter,Isabella. I love spending time with my family and our circle of friends. I love traveling and discovering new places, I love photography & reading blogs too!

During my free time, I read novels, I like the smell of the pages when you open a new book ;-) I also love to organize events, play dates, coffee catchups, brunch, ladies night out and parties.

I like making new friends and meeting new people from different backgrounds & cultures, I learn a lot from them, every experience, every lesson and every friendship is cherished.

2) What inspired you to start your own business?

The inspiration to start my own business happened after we got back from one of our family holidays, I suddenly missed going back to work and earning my own salary, but then this time around, I wanted to be my own boss, have a flexible work schedule where i can still be with my kids most of the day.

I wanted to do something that I am passionate about and at the same time challenging and something new for me to learn. I want to build a successful business which I can pass on to my children and to their children, I want to teach them about hard work and how it pays off, to motivate them to do great things, be creative, take charge and live their dreams.

The question after was, what kind of business would i like to pursue? The idea came about when we were in the swimming pool with our son Aiden & he was wearing his pool shoes that we bought from our previous trip. Some parents came to us and asked about it and where they can get it from, one of them actually suggested if we can sell them here instead of traveling all the way just to get it. And then one day, my son tried to wear his pool shoes and realized that it won't fit anymore. I tried searching for a pair here in Singapore and couldn't find any, so the business idea of having Poolzies was brought to life.

The reason why i am passionate about this product is because it somehow changed the way I am as a mom, I am a germ freak & being a first time parent I was paranoid about my son's well being and that very very hot day in the waterpark, I saw this pool shoes & knew I had to get it asap!

From that moment on, when i put them on my son, it was bliss!

He loved it too and would wear it almost everyday even if its just at home or downstairs in the pool area. Because of the soft fabric material, we just put it in our pocket/nappy bag and we take it with us everywhere we go.

That was when we finally decided that Poolzies it is! ;-)

3) How do you juggle between family and your business?

My family for me is my #1 priority, after that comes the business. I normally work in the morning when my son is at school and when my daughter is downstairs in the playground and when they're back home, I take a breather from work and spend some time with them. In the afternoons, If i don't have any meetings planned, I take my kids out with me. And then in the evening, when everyone is asleep, I go back to work again or browse the internet for ideas.

4) Do you have any advice for mothers like yourself who wants to start out on their own?

My advice for fellow moms out there who wants to start out on their own is to live your dream and make it a reality.

Put your mind to it. Starting a new business takes a lot of time and energy (& money too!). But the great thing about having your own business is that it allows you to work when its best for you, you can be flexible with your time and you can work from anywhere, as long as there is wifi connection.

Starting out on your own can be a great way to inspire people around you, especially your kids ;-)

I run a fortnightly "Working Mommas' Survival Tips linky", and this In Conversation series, we have guest parents on the blog to share how they manage this thing called parenthood amidst all other daily madness. If you have a tip or two  (or many many) to share, do link up here.
