[FTWM Truths] Why I don't lunch out

Image
This post is dedicated to my colleagues. Many know I don't usually dine out during lunch while at work. When I do, it is usually for official work reasons (must be really good reasons like celebrating a birthday etc) or to meet up with friends I have not caught up for ages or when I am super stressed and need a breather.

Day in a A Life: Weekend Fun

Image
I have been doing this working mama gig for about 3 years now, and really,   my weekdays are not the most interesting. Weekends on the other hand are different, especially so now that the man needs to work on shifts. This means on some weekends, it's solo parenting for me, and also an opportunity to spend 1-to-1 time with my cheeky monkey. Here's how one of my solo parenting Sunday looked like:

Being a better mum

source As I scanned through my list of my " 15 before 15" (which is the list of 15 things I wanted to achieve before 2015), some of them is about spending more (quality) time with J although not explicitly expressed. I constantly struggle to find that balance and it leads to what I call a world wide phenomena of the "working mothers' guilt".

Living up to expectations

Image
How many of us have gotten upset or angry when people critisise or question the things we do, the way we lead our lives and as a mother, the way we bring up our kids. People will bound to have their own opinion of things, and that's perhaps their right. How we react to it is maybe a reflection of how we think we have "performed" in their opinion. But does it really matter?  Subconciously, we get upset because we don't live up to their expectations. At least that's what I realise when I reflect upon some of the things that affect me. As a child, I was very afraid of not doing well in school as I know my mum will be disappointed. We were often compared to our overachieving cousins who all made it to the top schools in singapore (of the R family) plus prestigious universities in the UK and US. I made it to Australia only because I failed my A Levels. As I started dating, I cried myself silly when my then boyfriend decided to leave me. I thought I

International Buffet Lunch at Riverview Hotel

Image
We were craving for buffet last Saturday morning, and all popular buffet places in town were fully booked. After some googling, we thought why not give the International Buffet at Riverview Garden (Riverview Hotel) a try. Luckily for us, we were able to get a table on a Saturday afternoon. When we arrived, there was hardly anyone around. There were a couple of tables with big groups of guests, and we were happy to be given a little corner to ourselves. I love the old-school look of the joint, and let's just say the food more than satisfied our craving. Well, don't expect award winning fare, but they do make good decent food that's comforting for the tummies. Appetizers were not mind blowing. Pretty common buffet fare, although I liked their cured ham & melon where the sweetness of the melon puts a refreshing edge to the ham. The pumpkin & potato salad was also very yummy.  These looked really good, but was not as fresh as we liked. We usually do m

Kiddy Meals #2 - Milk-less Pancakes

Image
J loves his McDonalds pancakes, and so I thought why not make some for him on Saturday morning since I had most of the ingredients at home. Well... almost all except milk. So, I made a quick search online on some pancake recipe without milk, and this is what I came up with. My prata looking pancake that got more interest from the Hub, than the boy. Oh well... at least someone appreciates it. Recipe: 2 cups of all purpose flour 4 tsps of baking powder 2 tbsp of fine sugar (you can vary the amount used here based on how sweet you want them to be ) A pinch of salt 2 tbsp oil (or butter) 2 cups of water 2 eggs Method: 1)  Mix the dry and wet ingredients separately 2) Once well mixed, slowly introduce the wet ingredients into the dry one.  3) Mix them well, till there are no lumps, and leave the mixture to rest for 5 to 10 minutes.  4) Heat up the pan, and you are on the way to having a great wholesome brekkie.  The man actually likes his pancake

#1 - The week in pictures

Took a day off the public holiday (which also happened to be my 33rd Birthday) to make the weekend an extra long one. Started the long weekend spending time with Hwa. We lounged by the pool and went for a good dim sum... simply just spending quality time together. Something we have not done for a long time. We had a blast with the kiddo at the zoo and the mini celebration at home, although I have to admit I was disappointed that many peops dropped out of the party. Felt left out of sorts... but as I spent time in the company of my family and bestie, I could not be more thankful for the precious folks in my life. On 24 May...we decided to be spontaneous and take a trip down to the Zoo! J's first time. :) I was excited to engage him with the sights and sounds of the Zoo.  Sussing out his surroundings ...and he gets off the stroller ...deciding what he should do next ...pulling me along while he shops Sharing a moment with Papa while taking shelte
