Staying healthy with AIA Vitality

How many of us have often taken our health and wellness for granted? I certainly have!

Even when I had received a letter of postponement for an insurance policy I was trying to purchase, I took things lightly.

I thought, "Six months down the road when they (the insurance company) review my application, I just need to ensure I eat right, stress less and I will pass the medical examinations without a hitch".
Then the unexpected happened.

You know all those advertisements insurers put up that warn about how you need to ensure your loved ones are not financially burdened if you were to pass on? You think those are scare tactics? Let me tell you... what I went through was like bringing those advertisements to life!

I had a tubal pregnancy and was hemorrhaging - my life was on the line. My condition was not only taxing on my physical health, but also, on my mental health. I certainly would not have passed my medical examination if my insurance application was up for review, and if I had died, I would have left my husband with a huge debt because I was not insured. But, thankfully I pulled through.

The gravity of that episode was a wakeup call for me. Getting my health back and more, importantly staying healthy became personally crucial. Living healthily thus became one of my resolutions for 2014.

This is where I see the AIAVitality programme playing a key role in my journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

AIA Vitality is a health and wellness programme that was launched with the aim of championing healthy living and preventive care for families in Singapore through 3 distinct stages.

Step 1: Knowing your health
AIA Vitality encourages us to assess our health through free online wellness tools and discounted health screenings at participating clinics and pharmacies.

Personally, I find the principle to be simple. It is only when we know the state of our health that we will then know how to go about improving it.

As for me, I did the online Vitality Health Review (VHR), and from there, derived my vitality age.

Thank goodness it wasn't far off from my actual age! But that also meant that I needed to do a bit more work to be fit and well. My health results pinpointed areas I am doing well in, as well as areas of improvement, which is the section highlighted in pink below.

The results page of my online health assessment.
Step 2: Improving your heath

The real journey to better health starts here - when we work on our areas of improvement.

AIA Vitality helps by providing useful tools, and at the same time, making it affordable for us to attain better health through discounts on gym/fitness memberships, HealthyFood , workout devices and even programmes to stop smoking.

Vitality points is accumulated as we achieve our goals and head towards better health. The more points earned, the higher we climb in our Vitality status which also means we can unlock greater rewards!

I must say this is a good way to keep us motivated in our goals, and to keep us in check when we feel like faltering.

Step 3:  Enjoying rewards as we get healthier

So you might now ask what's in it for me? Of course, the ultimate goal of staying healthy so we can live longer, happier and have time for the more important things in life such as spending time with the family is on my priority list.

But, if I can be honest, the temptations of eating out all the time, lazing in bed whenever I get the chance to is all too alluring when all I want to do at the end of  each day is just to crash.

With the AIA Vitality programme, we actually get rewarded for getting healthy! Here's what we can get with our Vitality points:
  • Up to 15% off premiums* on selected AIA insurance policies;
  • Discounted movie tickets at Cathay Cineplexes no matter which status we are at on our Vitality journey;
  • Enjoy up to 50% off travel* with Emirates and AirAsia as we improve our Vitality status. (This has got to be my favourite and what I am working towards).
Taking the first step - AIA Vitality Bento Making Challenge

To me, taking baby steps is better than not starting at all, which is why I took part in the AIA Vitality Bento-Making Challenge last weekend. It gave me the opportunity to learn how to prepare a healthy meal for my family and shop for healthy food items at Cold Storage (one of AIA Vitality's partners).

"V" for Vitality

If you’ve noticed from my Vitality Health Review results, nutrition was highlighted as an area of improvement. This meant changing my current eating habits and cooking more often (with healthy ingredients, no less) to jumpstart my family on a healthy regime as well.

Here’s another perk you can enjoy as an AIA Vitality member!

Did you know that you can get up to 15% cashback off HealthyFood purchases from Cold Storage if you’ve completed the Vitality Health Check at selected Guardian Pharmacies, or unlock an instant 5% cashback after completing the online Vitality Health Review.

On top of getting discounts, any purchase of HealthyFood items at Cold Storage will also earn you 10 points for every $4 spent. That's really like getting double the rewards just because you choose to be healthy.

And if you think you will need to go through the list of HealthyFood before going to the supermarket, you will glad to know that identifying them is quite easy. Just look out for price tags accompanied by the AIA Vitality labels, or the letter "V" on the price tags.

Look out for the AIA Vitality label or just check out for the letter "V" on the top right of the price tag.
Now, making sure that the food we buy is nutritious without having to spend extra time reading the nutrition labels make grocery shopping for time-strapped mummies like myself so much easier. With a Cold Storage store near my office, I do foresee myself cooking more frequently on weekdays now.

I managed  to shop for several of the nutritious ingredients to make the bento that won us the 3rd prize in the AIA Vitality Bento-Making Challenge. Easy peasy!

List of healthy ingredients purchased from Cold Storage indicated on my receipt.
